Aspirant career development support

Support for aspiring directors 


As well as supporting NHS organisations appoint talent to their boards we also offer support to aspiring directors to prepare them for the transition to board level. 
 
Our aspirant director career development offer includes any or all of the following:
     
  • A one or two-day workshop focusing on the transition to board level, personal impact, an overview of the board appointment process, and guidance on the skills, knowledge and experience candidates are expected to demonstrate to show they are ‘board ready’
  • Master classes focused on specific career development needs such as. CV and applications, career development and interview skills
  • Personalised one to one career coaching focusing on career development, career transition or practical advice and guidance on specific appointment processes (including intelligence for specific roles)
  • Action Learning Sets to allow participants to work on real life challenges and bring their learning to life, learning through each other and developing a network of support
  • Assessment upon completion of the programme, often through a mock interview and presentation of the learning journey, with each participant ending the programme with a personalised action plan

Current and past work in this area includes:
  • The roll out and oversight of the Regional Director of Nursing Talent Scheme
  • The design and delivery of the current Aspirant Director of Workforce Career Development programme sponsored by NHS England, NHS Employers and HPMA
  • The design and delivery of the NHSI’s Next Generation Nurse Director Programme (four cohorts to date)
  • The design and delivery of the Next Generation BME nurse leaders career development and support programme on behalf of NHS England
  • The design of the attraction, recruitment and selection process for the NHSI-funded national Aspiring chief executive programme
  • Provision of a workshop and subsequent career development coaching support to participants on the Secretary of State-mandated national Executive Fast Track programme
  • The design and delivery of a career development workshop for the national DH-sponsored joint Arm’s Length Body (ALB) Developing Health Leaders programme (for aspirant director-level leaders in the fifteen DH ALBs)
 
Access to online career resource portal

We are currently pilotting access to an online career resource portal. It is focused on career development for senior leaders within the NHS and includes support and advice around:
  • Thinking about your next career step and how you get there
  • Career development tools and resources
  • Creating an effective and compelling CV and supporting statement
  • Interview preparation techniques
  • Navigating the board appointment process
  • Finding an opportunity through traditional job search and your networks
  • Selling yourself effectively
  • Managing your online profile
